Skis, snow and wild places - winter in Norway

The Venabu landscape is open and rolling, surrounded by mountains and birch forest, perfect for Nordic skiing

This is how I shall be spending the winter season 2017/2018.

I’ll be working at Venabu Fjellhotel, a wonderful hotel built and run by the Tvete family, on the southern edge of the Rondane National Park. I’ll be rejoining their ski guiding team, teaching Nordic skiing and leading daily ski tours. In January 2017 I qualified as a British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) Nordic Instructor.

Venabu is situated on a high plateau above the Gubrandsdalen valley, just north of Lillehammer. The landscape is open and rolling, surrounded by mountains and birch forest, perfect for Nordic skiing. There are many kilometres of cross-country tracks immediately accessible from the door. Fortunate skiers may catch sight of the wild reindeer living nearby and on some nights we are treated to the spectacle of the Northern Lights.

Working life there is pretty varied: in addition to the daytime ski touring I’m involved in the weekly night ski; snowshoeing and torch lit, horse drawn sleigh rides. It isn’t all about outdoor activity either, the food is superb and the hotel is actively developing its offer of relaxation and wellbeing in nature with massage, yoga and Pilates, not forgetting the traditional and supremely restorative Scandinavian sauna!

If you’d like to try cross-country skiing and have a Norwegian winter holiday why not check out holidays at Venabu? www.venabu.no/en/activities/winter-activities
