I'm recently back from Tignes and an avalanche training course presented by Alain Duclos.
Alain Duclos is a French mountain guide and is responsible for road avalanche safety in Savioe. He also delivers avalanche training at ENSA and to the British and Swedish mountain guides. After an afternoon out in the sunshine enjoying good conditions and the first ski of the season it was time to meet the group and take part in the training, which was outstanding.
Time spent inside was complimented by time outside studying the snowpack where we saw illustrations of points raised in the presentation.
Alain's presentation as very clear and is available online, in French. Some of Alain's thinking on avalanches and his decision-making model, which he supports with research findings and many years of experience, differ from other teaching methods and models. At times this made for lively discussion amongst the group of mountain guides, ski instructors and IMLs.
The links below take you to some of the resources shared on the course:
Here's to a safe, happy and successful winter.
